My cat has stopped drinking?

Our seven year old indoor cat suddenly became obsessed with drinking from glasses and the toilet. It took us a few days to notice he's not really drinking from his bowl. We've tried cleaning it repeatedly and tried setting out other bowls. He takes a couple licks then walks away seeming frustrated. Possibly related, he's started kind of gagging, but not in a hairball kind of way. He kind of tosses his head and smacks his gums. We're trying to get him to the vet ASAP, but I wondered if anyone had any advice in the meantime.
 
Oh wow I know that rabies victims are incredibly thirsty and have trouble drinking because it is painful and appear to be gagging.
I hope that's not the case but he should be taken to the vet quickly either way.

how log has your cat been silber? The first couple of weeks are the worst when recovering from a drinking problem.
 
Sorry, I've never heard of the specific thing your cat is doing...but if he's eating, it's probably not serious. I know some cats won't drink out of aluminum bowls, but you said you've changed the bowl so I'm stumped. You could always try force-feeding him some water, or offering him water from a moving source (I don't know what it is...but cats love water that moves...like a fountain or fishtank). You could also try giving him some soda water...just to see if he drinks it. Maybe he's just...mad at water or something. Cats are obsessed with carbonation....so see if that works. Also, how about bottled water? Cats have very in-tune taste buds, and they won't eat things that aren't healthy for them (that's why they're so picky with food). Maybe there could be something wrong with your water that the cat is picking up on....like arsenic?

sounds like kidney failure or bad hairball blockage. Both are deadly.
 
Our cat has always refused to drink standing water, even when it was freshly poured. We have to leave the faucet trickeling or he will go without water altogether. He also refuses to eat anything but fresh, dry cat food or (of all things) butter. He won't touch a can of tuna, and doesn't go near a saucer of milk. And he won't eat if the food has been sitting out more than 6 hours or so.

But if this is recent behavior change, I think Ferarri is right - get him to a vet.
