My dog has a lump on her chest?

She has a lump the size of a childs fist in her chest. I see her licking it at times but I'm not sure it hurts her or not. She is an older dog 16 yrs. I don't want to take her to a vet and they hurt her. My dog means alot to me my mother got me her when she was a puppy and my mom recentl passed so she is the last thing I have connecting me to her. I don't want to put her in pain or lose her. She is 16 but she still acts young the only problem is the lump.
By the way she is a whippet
