My father recently purchased a car then passed away.?

He had the car 4 months when he died. My mother was NOT a signer on the loan it was solely in my fathers name. My mother does not want to assume the debt of the car and wants to surrender it to the bank. Is she allowed to surrender the car? Or is she going to be responsiable for the car, being his wife and the benificary of his estate.
