My Betta keeps jumping out of its bowl!! I've been lucky enough that i've been home each time... I came out of the bedroom and he was almost over the ledge of the table! I was wondering if anyone has any ideas why he is doing this...

I feed him enough food
His bowl is always kept clean
Its big enough for him
The water is almost 3 inch's below the top!
Nobody teases him with mirrors or anything.
He doesn't have any noticeable diseases.
I don't think he's depressed? lol. He is very active.

Bettas are natural jumpers. In the wild they like to jump out of their natural waters. Hes not "depressed" or anything else, it's just instinct. I've only had this happen to me once. It was with a female Betta that I no longer have. She jumped out of her tank. I found her later. She was crusty and dry. I was about to go " bury her " when something told me to put her back in the tank, When she hit the water, she was swimming around like nothing happend. Now I have one male Cellophane Betta. He hasnt jumped out yet and hopefully wont. So dont think hes sick or anything. Hes just doing what he would in the wild. Eventually ( If he does it too many times ) He will learn if he jumps out... he may not come back in...

The fish may be naturally curious. The best thing you can do is put a thin layer of fabric over the top of the fishbowl. It'll stop Betta from escaping and it won't hurt as much when he jumps into it.

haha my beta is lazy and eats all the time...maybe get a cover for the tank or bowl...like those top things they have for the big aquariums.

Hes probebly just curious. Hes not trying to kill himself.lol. Hes a fish. He's not that smart. But, think, he could be scared and try to escape. i mean, how would u like it if u were kept in a clear small bowl with nothing to do? Buy a fish tank...a small one, if you only have one fish. Another suggestion would be to get another fish to keep him company. I would strongly suggest that. Also get a lid on the fish tank that u buy. lol

lol thats funny, u should get a cover for the bowl or get more fishes so he can have some friends =]

That's... weird. I've never heard of a suicidal fish.
Maybe he's just bored with life? You could get him a little fish buddy.

But honestly, he's a fish. Don't they have a memory span of like an hour? He's probably not really trying to off himself, maybe he just likes to jump?

... I don't know, sorry. Good luck though. (:

buy a cheap ten dollar 10 gallon tank with a cover and a and a small filter. fill it with some water treated with declorinator. then layer the bottom with a gravel substrate. finnaly put a small rock structure in the middle for him to claim as his territory. leave the rest open as swimming space. heat the tank to about 77-78 degrees and you should be good. bowls never work, they are to small and can not handle the atse that fish produce beacuse most do not have filters. also they have very little oxygen becuase of there size. finnaly, they stress out the fish.
