My gf has pda problems, can she overcome it?

My gf had a problem in 2nd grade where she liked this one boy and she told her family and they teased her and joked about it so now she is afraid to do anything in public because shes afraid she will get teased and made fun of, is there anyway to overcome this like start out slow and gradually increase or should i let it go?
