My hamster when I picked it up stiffened and stuck its tail in the air. What do I do?

When I first picked him up he uraned on my shirt. I checked to see if his tail was weat and I'm not 4 sure. I just cleaned it cage then it started stiffing out when I picked him up. And I put him back in his cage he acted normal. And when I put him back in he goes to the corner and stiffened with his tail up and stood still. I don't know what to do! Please help!
