My infant pet rat has some sort of breathing problem.?

I just bought him like 2 weeks ago, and he makes noise when he breaths. He sounds like he has as asthma or something. Im going to go to the vet. but I would really hate to spend so much money and find out theres nothing they can do cause he's too small. Has anybody heard of this before? Could it be dust, or the bedding?
