My iPhone isn't synced, how do I not lose my apps?

Heyy. I got my iPhone a while ago, tried to sync it and ended up losing all my apps, so didn't sync it. Now I need to to get the update (4g or something) but I'm scared to because all my apps will disappear and most of them are paid for. :/ How can I fix this?
When I try to update a pop up says "There are purchased apps on your iphone that have not been transfered to your iTunes library. You should transfer these items to your library before updating your iPhone. Are you sure you want to continue?"

What do I do?

Nothing to fear. It will ask you whether you want it backed up and if it doesn't it has probably already made a backup of it so after the restore/update it will restore back to the update so you will have the apps back. And the apps will not be lost as long as you authorize it (type in your account info) to verify that they are your apps.
