my jeep felt like the wheels locked up?

i was driving down my block when all of a sudden it felt like my driveshaft fell out of my jeep. i looked under it saw nothing, pressed on the gas and it looked like the rear end was lifting without the tires going anywhere. its a 92 jeep cherokee with high miles and the inline six. any ideas?
