my laptop wont recognize hardware?

my gateway 3550 gz will not recognize a piece of built in hardware that used to work before i got a virus and had to re- install windows. and unforunetley , that is the wireless internet connection thingy. i have the driver for it, from the website and it is installed but it does not recognize that the hardware is already in my computer. the only cause that i can find is that when i re installed windows , i used my freinds recovery disk also made by gateway BUT it is for a tablet PC so my computer tjinks im running with a newer laptop and that i have a tablet PC would that be the cause? if so how can i fix it? by the way in using windows xp.
