My snail, Oswald won't come out of the shell is it dead?

I found a snail a couple of days ago by the window and I picked it up and took it inside and put it in a jar and I put fruit and vegetable in it, and I got attached to it and gave him a name...Oswald...is it possible that it might have died? I was watching it and it wouldn't come out of his shell...should I bury it or wait until it comes out?
