i have a 1989 yamaha exciter and oil leeks into the exhaust and the spark plugs have went bad many times this winter. because oil is going into the exhaust it is backfiring. i was wondering what i could do. every answer helps. thanks in advance.

ok.. ex"ase to the rescue.. white smoke is coolant in the combustion chamber.. he must have blue smoke coming out of the exhaust when oil is burning! that WOULD be piston rings or a valve seal. what he may think is oil COULD be water mixing with soot from the exhaust pipe and coloring itself dark black or brown.. then it may be a head gasket or just water in the fuel. faulty spark plugs can be cleaned and reused with a few squirts of carborator cleaner and a amall piece of sand paper_be sure to gap them back to spec after cleaning! as with many (fun) vehicles (dirtbikes, jetski's, ect) daily cleaning and weekly maintaining should be done.. not always done by most.. but is going to be needed for extended use. mechines are useful and fun at times but have to be fixed many times in a short time due to the wear on parts and the abuse from the owners.. i wrecked many myself lol.. take an easy class on mechanics to fix your cool toys in record time!.. its more than just how to change your tire and oil (actually memorable enginering information)

ANY SMOKE?

Check Piston Oil Rings in Case of White Smoke
If white smoke is coming out from the exhaust pipe, you have to check some engine parts to determine the fault. Check the combustion chamber of the engine. If there is a lot of leaked oil in it, it means the piston oil rings are worn and are allowing oil to enter the combustion chamber.

Check the Valve-Train
Check for leaks in the valve-train as the valves seals in the valve-train prevent engine oil from entering the combustion area. A leak in the valve seals could be the cause of smoke and exhaust pipe oil-leaking too.

Check the Head Gasket
The head gasket keeps the car’s head attached to the main engine block and if the head gasket is blown, engine-coolant from the head can flow into the combustion chambers. This could also be the cause of the oil-leak or smoke that you notice through the exhaust pipe.

MAKE SURE OIL IS CHANGED AND NOT OVERFILLED.
CHECK PLUG WIRES ALSO.

hmm, is the oil gas mixture right, not too rich? If not, it sounds like it is worn out, take a compression test, see what you have. When you take off the exhaust, throw it in a fire, get it red hot, burn out all the oil and carbon inside it, it will run a lot better, if you want, paint it with some flat black BBQ paint!
