my son has been complaining of anckle pains help me?

my 10 year old son sprain his ankle and we didnt know how bad it was so we didnt do anything just let him rest and he said he felt better 2 days later now its been 2 and a half months and he complained it hurt and ive been noticing that it only happens from sports and dont say i should of taken him to the doctor and dont suggest that
