my sony ericsson shows an E or G on top of the signal bars, what is this?

my sony ericsson W380 is showing the E or sometimes G on top of the signal bars. it didn't used to, this has been showing up since i got it unlocked a few days ago. I think the E or G mean EDGE or GPRS, but is this just the signal? or am i connected? because i don't want to get a huge bill saying i was connected to the internet.
also, how do i turn it off?
