My Straightener Was Smoking, NOT Steaming! Small Explosion?

I was straightening my hair, (It was a bit moist, but that's never been a problem) and i put a bit of hair grease on the end. So here I am, straightener in hand, about to go over my hair. I'm just making contact when all of a sudden *BANG* *POP* *DINK* I hear mini-fireworks (and smell them) as I see smoke coming from within the straightener! I immediately unplugged it and fanned away the smoke. I also noticed a black burn spot on my floor. What could have gone wrong? And why did this happen when it made contact with my hair? Answers Much Appreciated!
