My 86 dodge ram won't start. Apparently the lights dimmed when you hit the brakes shortly before it wouldn't start. How can I tell if it's the starter, alternator, battery/connections, or some other problem? It is a manual trans. btw. Thanks!! Let me know if you would like any other details.
The engine doesn't turn over or make any noise at all when you turn the key/pump gas.

Jump it. Assuming it starts, measure the voltage across the battery terminals. If its less than 13 volts, your alternator is probably shot. More, then your battery was run down , or ready for replacement.

If it won't start when jumped, you're screwed. Get a new car.

well, it could be something electrical or if it's the starter there is this device to check for current. not sure what its called but i'm sure your local auto parts store will help you out. good luck
