My VW Polo engine light keptt coming on here and there now it is flashing!

What is wrong with it? I tried to start my car one day and the engine wouldnt turn over. I had to wait a while and when I tried again it came on....but a day later the engine light came on. It has done it 3 times since....its a VW 2003 Polo 1.4.....Any suggestions??
 
Could be anyone of numerous faults that the engine management unit is detecting.
You need to go to a garage that can read the codes from the ECU.
