John Winthrop and Roger Williams? Winthrop had a position of power and did not believe in religious freedom. Williams did believe in religious freedom, and was banished by Winthrop in the winter. Usually those who were banished in the winter could wait until spring to leave, but Winthrop made an exception and kicked Williams out immediately. But Winthrop secretly helps Williams twice, giving him important warnings, and they both write in their journals of their fondness for each other. The way I see it, Winthrop had to pretend to not like Williams because if he had helped him without hiding it, he would have been showing weakness, risking his position as Governor of Massachusetts. Can you think of a modern situation between people or groups of people? Any help would be much appreciated, thanks
