If you actually need the $150 adapter. You should just bite the bullet and buy it. There is more to it than just the door chimes. Without it, you can do serious damage to the vehicle's charging and electrical system.
Here is what the harness actually does.
* Produces Chimes for door ajar, seat belt, low oil pressure, hi-temp, low fuel, headlights, etc..
* Generates 12-volt accessory output & retains RAP function
* Uses genuine Delphi chip for seamless integration
* Provides “Healthy Status” report to the Class-2 system
Without the harness, you would have to find a switched accessory line and hard wire it yourself. The 2000+ GM radios are turned on by data. Not a 12 volt signal. Also, without the "healthy status" report, the vehicle's computer has to "relearn" every time you start the vehicle.
In my shop, I've heard horror stories about "do it yourselfers" frying batteries and alternators as well as air bag issues.
Your best bet is to get the GMCO harness. Here is a link to one that should work for you, As long as you don't have OnStar. http://cgi.ebay.com/SCOSCHE--GMLAN2SR-2000+-GM-Radio-Replacement-Interface_W0QQitemZ110341571077QQcmdZViewItemQQimsxZ20090123?IMSfp=TL090123112008r16081
Crutchfield is a good option. But, they won;t give you that harness for free. If you buy the stereo from them, they will give you a discount on the GMCO harness. I think it still runs you around $75.
