I took in an American Pit Bull Terrier mix as a foster. She is estimated to be between 2-4 yrs old. She was dumped at the shelter and it was obvious that she had recently had a litter, she was very swollen with milk. I brought her home and have discovered that she chews out of boredom, and possibly has separation anxiety. She is fine when she can see me, but the second I am out of her sight she starts chewing things. Usually it's just toys, but she has chewed carpet, blankets, and clothes. We kennel her when we go to work, which is generally about 5 hours a day. During the day she loves her kennel, she even goes in there to sleep. But the second she realizes that we are leaving she freaks out. She has chewed through the bottom of a XL plastic kennel. We tried putting toys in there with her but she shreds those too then starts chewing the kennel. We've tried hard marrow bones too but she gets bored with those. I'm not sure what to do. Someone suggested that I kennel her, pretend to leave, then come back about 2 minutes later and praise her with treats, then repeat this multiple times so that she knows that I'm not going to leave her, and that I will always come back. Aside from this what else can I do? Other than the chewing issues she is the sweetest girl in the world.
