Newbie needing race help warcraft 3!?

I'm new to this game. Which race should I choose? I like to play more defensive. Build up a strong town first, then go to war with my army. I find that wc 3 attracts a lot of rushing, which I need to overcome. I want a race that maybe takes a little longer to develop, but once it does, it's tough as hell. If I do that, I need the defense to be strong to survive me until I can build the army up. I'm not interested in aggro rushing.

Which race would I be if I want to play defense at first, then send my army out to do battle. Of course creep to build my hero, but I don't want to be aggressive and harass or invade the first 5 minutes. I want tough sob's who survive in battle and a race that creates that along with a strong, defensive town to overcome rushers while building a tough army at a bit slower rate, I guess. Which race caters to that? Also, which hero, specifically, should I choose within that race?
