These new Denver Nuggets, sans Carmelo Anthony, are tough to beat. Just ask the Sacramento Kings. On Wednesday night, the Kings were up at halftime, 51-41. However, in the second half, the Nuggets got rolling and smashed the Kings by a final score of 104-90. The win improved the Nuggets to 45-29.
The Nuggets had six players in double-digits. Ty Lawson led the way with 20 points on 7-for-9 shooting from the field. Danilo Gallinari had 17 points, nine rebounds and three steals, while J.R. Smith added 17 points, five rebounds and four assists.
This was Denver’s first game in five days. Smith blamed that break for the rough start.
Said Smith: “We got used to playing against each other instead of playing against everybody else. We were rusty out there.”
The Kings were led by Marcus Thornton’s 27 points. Since being acquired from the New Orleans Hornets, Thornton is averaging 22.4 points per game on 47.1% shooting from the field and 42.6% shooting on threes.
The Nuggets now seem to have a firm hold on the No. 5 seed in the Western Conference. In the first round of the 2011 NBA Playoffs, they will likely take on the Oklahoma City Thunder.
