Okay, what's a codec?

And do I have to convert an avi file to xvid, or....wot? Like I'm 5, dude, like I'm 5.
 
The player would have to have support for avi. Most recent players do. Should just be able to pop it in and play it.

If it doesn't work, try using a program like Nero to burn it as a VCD to a CD or DVD and then try playing it. I've had luck with both.
