For my summer reading assignment we read The Once and Future King by T.H. White. The assignment for the reading states: "After reading through chapter 14 of The Once and Future King, you should realize that Arthur moves from a pessimistic outlook of life to a more optimistic one. List below, in your own words, the ideas from the outline which are pessimistic and those which are optimistic." And then a chart is provided for me to fill in optimistic and pessimistic ideas which are presented throughout the novel. Then there is an essay prompt which states: "Based on your response to the above exercise, do you feel that the entire novel, The Once and Future King; is pessimistic or optimistic in its overall outlook? Support your answer with at least three reasons. You must include textual evidence from the novel to support your argument." For my essay I was hoping to lean more toward the optimistic side of the argument. I do understand what optimism & pessimism mean and I have found a few examples of both throughout the novel, but I was wondering if the examples I found to support my argument of optimism are any good. So far I've found these examples of optimism: -Arthur's optimism keeps him from believing the love affair between Guenever and Lancelot. -Arthur is able to see through the myths that glorify war. (I don’t know how to support or elaborate on this though...) And I am still searching for a 3rd example... So my questions for anyone who wishes to help are: I need help finding good examples of optimism in TO&FK that I can elaborate on and support with textual evidence. How can I elaborate on how Arthur sees through myths that glorify war? & any other advice/help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated! Thank You to all who take the time to read all this and help me out! I know it’s a lot to ask, but any help at all is great to me! Again, thank you!!! :)
