I like original concepts like Garth Nix's Abhorsen Trilogy (Shade's Children was good too) and Philip Jose Farmer's Riverworld Series. Or something like Bradbury for sci-fi. I want books that you have a hard time putting down and that have creative concepts. Also while not required something that is popular enough that I could find it at my local library is helpful. I'm 21 years old but I don't mind reading something made for teens or children as long as it's good. Please include a sentence or two about why the book is good, thank you!

P.S. Please don't suggest LOTR, The Chronicles of Narnia, Harry Potter or Twilight. I have read all of these. The first two I love (although I want something that reads faster than LOTR and something more original than the Narnia series), the second two were alright.

It's difficult to recommend anything "original", because most stories are derived from somewhere. However, I'd really recommend The Dark Tower series by Stephen King.

I recommend this because King was trying to capture the epicness of LOTR with an updated setting. It's as you described - a faster read than LOTR and more original than Narnia. The series cannot be classed into any specific genre, sci-fi, fantasy, horror, because it has elements of all three. Imagine the Wild West but with futuristic (and dying) elements and a questing hero who is very magnetic and also has action, horror, cerebral reads AND mysticism. It's really hard to quantify.

And I certainly couldn't put it down. As soon as I finished one book it was straight on to the next.

I tend to like more space & technology books so all the books by Issac Asimov were great. Starting with The Foundation, continuing on caves of steel. When true night falls was a great side book by him. More recently I have read a number of books by Stephan Baxter. You should check out the sci fi book club. They have all kinds of fantasy and sci fi books, they make you buy like 4 or 5 books but they give you 4 or 5 esentially free. The you can just stay on the side lines and buy when you want. They give you descriptions of all new books. Actually, you could just check out the website without joining. On the fantasy side I read a couple of books by c.f. friedman starting with Black Sun Rising.

Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. pretty much a classic now, it's really good, i couldn't put it down and it's DEFINITELY original :)

Dawn Cook's truth series is pretty original. The first book is called First Truth.
