PACKARD BELL EasyNote TJ71-RB-050, External volume controls problem?

On my PACKARD BELL EasyNote TJ71-RB-050, I have the external volume controls where you can tap it to increase, decrease or mute the volume.
However, for some reason, the red light for the mute button does not come on when I tap it. Has the bulb gone, or is it something I can turn on and off?
Also, when I first got the laptop, whenever I pressed volume controls a white speaker came up on my screen with a blue volume level. This does not appear anymore. How can I change this so it appears again?
 
i had the same problem with my acer 8930g which has the same controls. i just reinstalled latest drivers from acer website and my problem was solved. try getting some latest drivers from packerd bell website. that might help. or just refresh ur windows, do a fresh installation of ur windows.
