Client ordered translation and when I finished 25% of the book I sent a bill to the client but the he refused to pay indicating that the whole book must be completed. I am quoting from the email that the client has sent:
“We cannot pay your translation as long as the proofreading is not ok. You must understand that we have to make sure that the translation is ok in order not to commit the same mistake concerning past translations with other translators. We look forward to have the whole book translated before settling everything. We also have to check with matters concerning copyright etc”.
Obviously the previous translator had some mistake in his translation but because the person was too much trusted [in this regard I call it nepotism] in the organization, they did not send the text to be edited and the book was published carrying an obvious mistake especially in the coverage.
Question: Is that normal to wait until the end to get paid? Or the client must pay for each part we produce? Client is withholding the payment to the end, is that a normal procedure? Translator, editor and proofreader are three separate agents. If editor or proofreader delay in their work, should I wait until they do their job to ask for the payment?
I also need to know if the following process is correct or not:
Order=>translator translates=>editor edits=>proofreader checks=>final revision done by translator=>end
Your advice is greatly appreciated.
