Tiger Woods
Current world ranking: 30
So far this year: Wellllll ... it's been pretty bland. Tiger was in contention at the Masters before falling apart on the back nine. He returned to the Players Championship for a total of nine holes, pulled out because of injury and was out three months before a return last week at the Bridgestone Invitational where he finished tied for 37th. Total top-10s this season? One.
Record at the PGA Championship: You know the history of Tiger at majors, and this is one of his best ones. Woods has four wins, all coming from 1999-2007, but more surprising, has two runner-up finishes, with the latest coming in 2009. Tiger finished tied for 28th a year ago.
Why he could win: Because he's a champion, darn it, and champions win! Tiger has 14 major championship titles! He's due to bounce back! But honestly, if Tiger could have a hot opening round, and keep it going on Friday, he might be in the hunt, and we all know how Tiger is when he's in the hunt at a major.
Why he could fall short: Because he's played in one tournament since the Masters, and can't expect to shake the rust this fast, even for Tiger. He is the most talented golfer of this generation, but he's going to need a lot more reps to keep up with the type of talent out there today.
Our take: I think we'll see one good round, one bad round, and two mediocre rounds, much like at Firestone, and he'll finish around that same number come Sunday.
Your turn, folks. Is this Tiger's week, or should we expect much of the same?
