i was doing an software update that i downloaded and burned to cd and while the player was updating the power got shut off and now the player is dead
 
First, try unplugging it from power, wait a minute or two, and plug it back in. If that doesn't work, do what the first responder suggested.
 
Refer to the manual and find the section about updating firmware. It should have combination of buttons to reset it. If not, go on the web and contact Philips and they should be able to help you.
