Phone help? BlackJackII <--> LG Xenon?

So recently, my friend and I switched phones. We both have AT&T and thus, we just switches SIM cards. Everything was nice, but two days later, I get a text saying that I need a data plan for that phone. My friend had a BlackJack II, and I had an LG Xenon (now it's vice versa). So my question now is, does this mean that my phone (the BlackJack) is pretty much spending money on miscellaneous things since I don't have a data plan? Or is whatever application not available to me since I don't have that plan? And if the first is true, is there a way to stop its spending?
