One of the most liked players in baseball history died on Thursday. In the days since that horrible news, people from around the world have told how much they appreciated Gary Carter. The Hall of Fame catcher is probably best known for leading the 1986 New York Mets to a World Series championship.

Said Tim Teufel: “Initially it was sad and then you realize that he lived a great life. I think, speaking from their family standpoint, there’s remorse, but there’s peace because he’s such a godly man.”

Teufel was a teammate of Carter’s on the 1986 Mets team.

Carter died from a malignant tumor in his brain. Even though his prognosis had been poor for a while, Carter remained close to the game.

“He knew the situation he was in, he knew that clock was ticking and he just wanted to be around the game and talk about the clubhouse and what was happening on the field,” said David Wright, the current third baseman for the Mets.

Carter was only 57 years old.
