Last night I put Planet Earth into my PS3 (insert joke regarding PS3 having a large enough capacity to hold the entire planet here) to watch it for the first time; I'd never watched any Blu-Ray discs before and was eager to make this my first.
Much to my disappointment it wouldn't play. Instead it would return me to the XMB with the message 'This video cannot be played.', though sometimes (seems random) it would go as far as to show the '2 | entertain' logo before leaving me with a blank screen and no sound (I can still access the Control Panel though). In both cases it takes a minute or more before anything happens and the little orange light flashes once with long intervals (e.g. nothing for around 10+ seconds then one flash followed by another flash then and another 10+ seconds and so on).
I've tried changing the Display and BD/DVD settings (after finding similar cases on line and following advice given) but to no avail.
I'd also heard that it may be a scratched disc but I bought it brand new from dvd.co.uk (http://www.dvd.co.uk/DVD/Planet-Earth-Blu-Ray/BBCBD0001/product.htm?sr=gsp). They offer a replacement if need be but I would feel better exploring all avenues first.
Planet Earth itself is region free while the PS3 is UK region.
I have a Samsung 19" HD Ready TV (http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5290994/Trail/searchtext%3ESAMSUNG.htm - in black though because black is nifty!), it isn't capable of 1080p but is of 720p, 1080i and lower; on the back of the Planet Earth box there's it says '1080p capable' and nothing more but should that matter?
I bought my 60GB PS3 2nd hand on ebay (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=140228370258&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=004) but it is otherwise working perfectly and the sellers seemed very genuine.
I'd really appreciate any advice anyone has as I'm both pissed off and disappointed (it was a birthday present for yesterday).
Sorry for the long winded question (I assure you it's a better read than Finnegan's Wake though!).
Cheers to R "n" D for the super fast and helpful reply!
