Playstation 3 blu ray question?

How do you get rid if the annoying 'letterbox' display whenever you play a DVD or blu-ray disc? I've tinkered with the BD options on the PS3 menu screen, changed it from letterbox to 4:3 amongst switching other settings, but still I can't get a full screen. All my games and my television programmes are full screen, why not the film discs?
