Yesterday my horse had an accident. A really, really bad accident. I won't go into too many details because it's quite long and lengthy, but, basically, he ended up running about with a metal pole atteched to his leadrope.
There was a lot of blood. I've never seen so much blood before! The vet came as soon as possible and wrapped him up. Apparently he severed a huge artery at the back of his off-hind hoof. Sort of in the fetlock area, but possible lower cannon bone. I don't really know. I didn't want to look.
As well as cutting this artery (which was causing all the bleeding/spurting) he has also destroyed tendons and a few nerves. The vet told us that the horse would probably never be able to be ridden again, and the first 24hrs were crucial.
So I guess my question is this: What are the chances of my horse surviving and, if so, what are the chances I could ride him again? I'm not too fussed if I can't jump (I prefer dressage) but as long as he won't have to be put down is fine with me. My father has said even if I can't ride him ever again, we will definitely still keep him, so it's not like he'll be sold off ASAP.
Please do help. I love this horse so much and I really want him to be okay.
Thanks loads if answered!
Right now he's being kept in teh house paddock, so he's not galloping about with my other horse. He can still hobble along, and he seems fine, albeit a little tired.
Coat is shiny and clean, eyes perky and ears alert. There's not more blood - but I wouldn't really know as the wound is all bandaged up. I have a feeling it's a very deep wound, though, considering the amount of blood.
