Please newbie to ubuntu 2.8 ultimate help with connection?

Ok im running ubuntu 2.8 ultimate from a usb partition. Was able to get online and use fire fox yeah. Now after about 4 min connection stops. No notification and net manager icon is gone, cant even find the program to reconnect. I want to install avast for linux but what issues will arise comsiderimh im running direct from a usb parrition. Seems to freeze up momentaeily amd wireshark crashed rhe whole thing even havw to reboot to try wireless connection again. How can I spoof my mac address and how much mem will ubuntu 11.xx take imw using an asus eee pc netbook with about a gig of ram please all sugestions
 
I've never heard of Ubuntu 2.8 UE until just now, and I'd assumed you had the numbers wrong. Apparently not...Anyway, open a terminal and try typing in "sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart" without the quotes, see if that does anything. If that fails, try "sudo ifconfig eth0 reset".

Running Ubuntu on a flash drive does work, though you will tend to encounter far more problems than if you were to use a real hard drive. I've done it a lot of times with multiple versions, I found that Ubuntu 10.04.2 is by far the most stable. You also might consider trying Debian instead.
Oh, and 11.04 will run with only 1GB of RAM, I'm using up only 580MB right now (This is a desktop, but it doesn't make a difference), with my web browser open, using Flash player, I've the terminal open, and my music player (Banshee) is running.
