Sam rubbed his eyes and sighed, “Nothing that made any sense, just uh… that he would call us every day to let us know what was happening.”

“Happening?”

“Yeah, I didn’t know either.” Sam stood up off of the bed put his hand out. I thought he wanted the note back, but he knocked it out of my hand and pulled me up by my wrist.

“Come on, let’s get out of here.” He forced a half smile and pulled me out of the room. He led me outside, around the back of the house, where a large pile of split firewood and an equally enormous pile of whole logs sat under a green tarp. Sam motioned me to sit on a large log as he pulled the axe from a tree stump and began to chop.

“Is this your version of therapy?”

“Hah, yeah I guess you could call it that.” He swung the axe down again. “Sometimes when Adam and I get in arguments I find myself taking it out on inanimate objects.” He chuckled.

“Well, better wood than him I guess.” I sat for a while, silently watching him release his aggression and with each swing, he exhaled. It was like watching a manly form of yoga. Oddly enough, watching his process was hypnotic in a way, my own therapy. “Mind if I take a whack at it?” I stood up.

“Sure, swing away.”

As I stared at the wood, trying to make sure that I could hit it in the middle, I realized that I shouldn’t have bothered trying. I swung down on it anyway. The axe didn’t even make it halfway through the log.

“Uh, maybe you should leave the chopping to me.” I could tell he was holding back laughter as I handed him the axe.

“Yeah, I guess I should.” Sam hammered the axe back into the stump.

That’s when I saw her. I stood up as a flash of blue ran through the woods across from us. She turned her head and flashed an ominous smile. Just as quickly as she appeared, she was gone.

“Emily? What’s the matter?” Sam walked over to me, but my eyes were still scanning the forest, waiting for another glimpse of her. “Emily?”

“She was there, I saw her.” I said pointing towards the trees.

“Her? Who did you see?”

“The woman from my dream.”

“Woman? You know what she looks like?”

“Well yeah didn’t Adam tell you? She looks just like m-there!” She appeared once more in the same spot only this time Sam saw her too. His eyes followed her as she sprinted through the trees, her ice blue dress trailing behind her.

Sam stumbled back and collapsed onto the ground. Within seconds his eyes went white and he began to convulse.

“Sam!” I ran to his side and tried to cradle his head without holding it down. White foam poured from his mouth as his eyes changed from white to black. Slowly his pupils returned until they grew so large they overtook the place where his irises should have been. The convulsion ceased and he lay still as the dead, but before I could react, the hairs on his arms raised. One by one they rose and became rigid. I picked up his hand and held it in mine. First I looked at the back, then his at palms. Small, fine hairs spiked up from his fingertips down to the bottom of his palms. Then with an uproarious jolt, he sat up and inhaled as if he were drowning.

“Sam?” He darted around to face me faster than I could watch, within a millisecond he was on his feet looking inches from my face. His eyes were black as midnight. He crouched down predatorily with his back arched, and slowly placed both his hands to the ground as if he was feeling for something.

Sorry for the slopiness, it's a rough rough draft :)
