Earlier this week, Richard Bevan, chief executive of the League Manager's Association (and definitely not the owner of a Premier League club), played the role of Chicken Little and announced that the foreign (and presumably evil) Premier League owners are scheming and plotting to eliminate the promotion and relegation system. "There are a number of overseas-owned clubs already talking about bringing about the avoidance of promotion and relegation in the Premier League," Bevan squealed. "If we have four or five more new owners, that could happen."
This sparked widespread panic among the bored, the easily terrified and the journalists on deadline. How dare these soulless opportunists from places that are a whole sea away try to destroy all that is good with football in England just to protect their massive and silly investments?!
Well, the AP has gotten to the bottom of the non-issue, asking Liverpool owner John Henry -- one of those dastardly American owners -- to admit the truth:
Henry called that "complete nonsense," telling The Associated Press it "hasn't been discussed."
And this comes days after Aston Villa owner Randy Lerner -- another one of those overseas people who also owns a team in a sports league free of relegation -- "definitely ridiculed" the idea of doing away with relegation in the Premier League. It also comes days after our DT Exclusive sarcastically foretold all of this. So, long story short, we were right. Ha.
