Problem with my Nokia 8800. Help?

Recently purchased a sim free Nokia 8800. Put in my vodaphone sim card and allowed phone to charge. When switched on, network comes up on screen but can't do anything after that. Button keypads work but just stays on menu screen. Can't get to other options?

Is the battery faulty? the phone? Something I'm forgetting to press?
