Problems with dishwasher with hidden vent?

I have a dishwasher that has had several problems and now have the option to replace. I love my dishwasher and all its features. One feature is the hidden vent on top of the dishwasher door that can only be seen when the dishwasher is open. The problem is the counter top above the vent is starting to fall apart and I don't know if this is because of the style of the dishwasher or the broken heating element that dries the dishes. I didn't notice the problem with the counter top until the heating element went out but I don't want to assume anything. So....has anyone with a hidden vent dishwasher had any problems with their counter top falling apart? (Obviously granite counters are excluded.)
