We just got an 8 week old puppy today and he is the cutest thing on the planet... Anyways... We discovered that whenever we leave the room, he WHINES, CRIES and HOWLS really loudly! We have no idea how to stop it but of course, he is just a little baby. Even sometimes when you're standing on the other side of the kennel he will bark, whine and cry.

He won't go to sleep either. He will if he is with you but during the day if we leave for a couple hours... HOW ARE WE GOING TO HANDLE THIS? He sure is little, but sure has a BIG howl but yes, he is a beagle/ rat terrier. He is the biggest love bug though... As long as you're there, he won't whine, cry or howl but yeah... I tried music and that didn't really help at all.

PLEASE HELP!

if what she said doesn't work, you may want to go to a vet. your pup may have strong separation issues and the vet can give you some pills that will help calm him down. i heard of it on it's me or the dog.

I had a beagle mix and she did the exact same thing. I was always told that the "beagle breed" gets very attached to their owners. That was my puppy's issue. If you try a sound machine or something that has your scent or sound and put it either next to the puppy's cage or in, it should help.

His br3eeder should have told you this, and from now on, I hope this is someone you can call for advice at any time. That is what good bredeers do - stick by their puppies and their people.

He neeeds to be crated, next to your bed with a blanket. When he cries, just reach over silently, and put two fingers in the crate through the bars - but don't say anything. Just so he knows you are there... If the crate is a wire one, put a towel or a blanket over it, so it's like a cozy den.

Keep in mind that yes, he is a bay, and this is the first time he has ever been alone in the big world. Before this, there was always another puppy and his mom right there with him.

He should either be crated, or get a lot of pickup and handling time. Give him a couple days, alternating with short times on the floor in a pen or other protected area, or outside in the yard, again in a pen or protected place.

He'll soon get tired of that and want to explore - but for now, he's a baby. Ttreat him like one, and he'll settle down.

it is probably separation anxiety some dogs have that which could be bad in the future
i am not sure what to do but the best thing i would do is leave him something to play with or something like these toys for dogs that is like a ball and you could stuff food in it(dog food, treats, etc)
it would get him occupied but at such a young age i would think of getting the whole family and leave for 5 minuets come back and praise him keep doing that each time a little longer(don't do that all at once)so the dog knows that you will always come back

I know my advice will suck now, but it will be good in the long run.
Don't pay attention to the dog when he's crying. As he gets older he'll realize it doesn't work and will stop crying. I know sleeping will be hard with his crying but just keep him on the opposite floor of your house in a small crate he can't pee in and have him sleep there. After a good week or two he'll realize crying won't do anything for him and he'll stop. He most likely has separation anxiety which can be decreased over time.

Hi! I brought my puppy home when he was 3 months old, so just a little older. I had the same issue, the moment you were out of sight he would whine and howl.
One thing that I always did to help Bailey fall asleep was sit next to the gate of his crate and stick my fingers in so that he knew I was there.
The whining WILL stop. Seriously stick to crate training, it will be the best thing you do for you and your dog! Bailey is 7 months now and he goes into his crate when commanded and no longer whines when we leave. It took a couple months, but it'll happen.

Another thing you have to keep in mind is that you're going to want to leave your puppy in the crate when you sleep. Puppies at 8 weeks are only able to hold their bladders for an hour or two at a time. You'll have to get up multiple times at night to take the puppy outside... he'll probably wake you up with whines when he has to go potty. That will also eventually stop. :) It's all worth it!
