Check the spring-loaded automatic belt tensioner for the serpentine belt if you have the 2.4L engine. That automatic belt tensioner has 3 bolts which secures it to the engine block and those bolts on the 2.4L engine are notorious for loosening and causing the automatic belt tensioner to shift slightly out of alignment so that the tensioner pulley does not roll in perfect alignment with the serpentine belt and the noise it makes sounds almost exactly like the whine an alternator makes if it has a faulty regulator and is overcharging. Spray a generous amount of water on the flat side of the serpentine belt while the engine is running (to lubricate the flat side of the belt) and if the whine goes away then it is a good bet that the bolts securing the automatic belt tensioner to the engine are loose and the tensioner has shifted out of alignment. The fix is to remove those 3 bolts one at a time and apply some BLUE Loctite threadlocker to the bolt threads and then securely tighten them. I don't recommend that you use the red Loctite threadlocker on those threads because the red Loctite threadlocker will lock the threads so tight that it will be very difficult to remove them if they need to be removed sometime in the future. The BLUE Loctite threadlocker will secure those bolts very well and yet allow them to be removed in the future without great difficulty.
