Question about Great Dane?

My sister's Great Dane had to be put down because he at and his gut "twisted. Can someone tell me what that means? Thank you.
 
Basically the intestines are twisted, causing problems with passing bowels and such. Any dog surgery is pricey, it may have cost too much money!
