Question for anyone who works for any of the major retail phone shops i.e. T- Mobile?

I am currently a chef of 22 years in the forces but i leave in August and i want to go into the retail mobile phone industry.
What kind of qualifications are required and what training if any are you given, may be i would like to eventually become a manager of a shop, but would i be too old at 40 to be considered?
Any information would be gratefully accepted.
