Rap & Hip Hop: Buy or Sell: In rap lyrics Metaphors > Entendres (Puns and such) >...

...Punchlines? Now, I know what you might be thinking, metaphors are easy to make up and shouldn't be made to be thought of as superior, but the reason I would put them up there is simply because where one is, usually a lot more follow suit. Let's take for example 99 Bottles from the album The Ugly Truth by Prolyphic and Reanimator.

It's pretty loaded with a bunch of metaphors and such. While Entendres can be incredibly clever, structuring an entire track with intelligent metaphors can be more difficult than a very clever triple entendre.

Entendres are still the most prevalent expression of lyricism in mainstream rap and I think they are still an incredible testament to an MC's skill and how clever they are. Still it's a different kind of intelligence; Entendre's can suddenly come to you while your washing dishes or something (especially if you're talented), while making a metaphor filled track is difficult no matter who you are.

For the last one, punchlines is sort of self-explanatory. More clever things, more simply thought up on the spur of a moment, but instead of an expression of talent or creative thinking, it's more of just being knowledgeable. Punchlines are created by basically knowing about things associated to what you're making the punchline about.
