I recently decided to get into RC cars and trucks... I really want one! But I have no idea where to start or what to buy. I'm looking on random websites and they are all really nice looking but I don't want to buy something cheap and end up wasting my money (which has happened many times in the past). I see so many different options: Brushless motors and what not, nitro, electric... etc.... I was wondering if you guys could help me find a good starter that's good quality and will last me a long time. I have a budget of $150. Also, if you know of a good RC forum, that would be great too. Thanks!!
 
This is one of the BEST hobbies I ever got into. To start, you want to buy from a hobby shop. Stay away from places like WalMart, Radio Shack, etc. A good place to look is towerhobbies.com. Some of the top brand names are Traxxas (my fav), HPI, Associated, Kyosho, Tamiya and Losi. If you want to get something good you might have to expand your budget a little. I would start off with electric since that is easier and less maintenance. Try looking at the Traxxas Slash 2WD. It's one of the most popular RC trucks on the market today and is fairly cheap. You can cut the price down to 3 monthly payments. So your $250 slash is going to be $83 a month for 3 months. Also, the home page has coupon codes for $25 off your order and free shipping. So that will help get you closer to your budget. Really, that's about the cheapest you are going to find and still have quality, as far as 1/10th scale. You could get a 1/16th scale for a little cheaper but they are not as fun as the bigger ones. A great RC forum is on the Traxxas.com web site. It's for traxxas vehicles only but I would suggest Traxxas anyways. They come with waterproof electronics so if you plan on using this RC in the mud, or water puddles or snow, Traxxas is the way to go. And the customer service is outstanding! If you get a good one, expand your budget a little, it will be well worth it. Like you said, you wasted money in the past. Going with a hobby grade RC like the name brands I mentioned above will cost a little extra money but they are better than anything you will see on the shelf of a big box store.
