um HELP!!!!!!!!

Was just cleaning out my fridge and freezer and noticed at the back of my freezer the tines in the vent (basic Frigidaire model with freezer on top) had melted and a little part of the freezer bottom was yellow, cracked and warped. Then I saw a red hot coil in the back behind the vent. I've unplugged the fridge and the coil is dark. I've done some googling and someone says its the defroster. Plus my boyfriend messed with my fridge a while back, thinking cranking up the knobs to high made my 1/4 full freezer extra cold (he knows better now).

Is that coil supposed to glow? Is it really the defroster? If I had something stored in front of the vent (guilty) would it cause the vent to melt? Or would my bf's messing with my freezer have caused the melted plastic earlier?

Help! Don't want my apartment on fire. But don't want to lose my groceries.

Yep, thats really the defrost coil. Just like the other poster said, its not supposed to deform any plastic inner panels of the unit. No, your BF jacking with the controls didn't cause it.

It is your defroster but it shouldn't get so hot as to melt the plastic like that.call your apt manager and get it fixed
