Reformating laptop? Hard drive not found? How do I reformat?

Well, our laptop has a keylogger. I know how to clear everything for a desktop computer but not a laptop. I've already tried booting from the cd, and trying to install XP instead of repair and stuff, but whenever I do that, it says something around the lines of a hard drive not found? Is there any solutioion to this so I can clean up the WHOLE laptop and make it safe? Thank you.
