Hi, I have a Compaq computer. I want to reinstall Windows. I have a Dell reinstallation CD. Will it work on this pc and can I use the key that is in the system already with the new install?
No it likely will not. Here's why:
Reinstallation discs will usually contain the drivers for the machine they are packaged with. In this case, it would probably try to install the drivers for the Dell it came with, which will be different from the ones for your compaq, which will cause problems. Another reason is that Dell reinstall discs come with the key preloaded. You won't get the opportunity to enter the cd key, and when you try to activate it will give you problems. An OEM cd or retail cd would be your best bet. I would say try to download the cd through a torrent or something, and go that route. If your compaq is relatively new, it might have a recovery partition. If it is, send me a message and I'll try to walk you through accessing your recovery partition and you won't need a disc.
