Religion-Rant, Thoughts?

Today a teacher at my school commented on the Japanese people's past belief that their Emperor was the reincarnation of God. The teacher scoffed at the idea, saying 'how shocking it is to imagine a modern society thinking such a thing'.

I was totally stunned; how could they be so foolish? The teacher is a strong Catholic. Jesus once lived on this Earth, and her religion sees Jesus Christ as God on Earth, God's son. How could anyone be so narrowminded as to look upon another culture with such a SIMILAR belief? It is more credible to say that the Japanese emperor was God rencarnate than Jesus was- just because a thousand year old book says Jesus was the son of God doesn't make it so.

Another thing I often think about, is how shunned any 'pagan' belief is in todays society. Anything different is heavily frowned upon and is of course absurd.
Surely not as absurd as nailing a preacher to a cross and saying that this makes God not hate us?

Marx was absolutely right about religion.
Religion is the very reason why our society is coming apart. I can't comprehend how ridiculous it is to believe so rigidly in what you are told. Elaborate, archaic lies.

Perhaps there is some higher power. Why must there be different ways of showing your worship to them? Why must, for example, Catholic Christians fight so vehemently against Protestant Christians. Are they not worshipping the same God- that same God who said 'Thou Shalt Not Kill?'

I will perhaps add more when I can think of something more cohesive to say.
Your thoughts.

No, no, no, you've diagnosed a symptom as the disease!

"Religion is the very reason why our society is coming apart." No, our society is coming apart, and that's why we have a resurgence of the militant Christian right (at least in the united states). Read American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America by Chris Hedges. Written by a Christian. He sees a lot of the things I already figured.

Anyway, yes. It's always going to annoy those of us who think more critically how people criticize something that is basically a parallel to their own beliefs. But this is nothing new about humans. It's kind of how we are. That's why it takes mental effort to see through the nonsense whereas seeing the nonsense is much easier.

I don't actually sense the same vehemence you do. I believe the vast majority of people are religious, but not incredibly dogmatic and confrontational about it.
