Long before HGH and other steroids were all the rage, Harmon Killebrew was hitting bombs with natural brute strength. Blasting a 500 foot home run was nothing for the gentleman ironically nicknamed “Killer”. On Tuesday, the Minnesota Twins legend died after a battle with esophageal cancer.
In the 1960s, Killebrew was the man. He led all of baseball in homers (393) and walks (970) during the decade. He was also second in RBIs (1,013) and extra base hits (593). Killebrew put an exclamation point on the end of his decade of dominance, winning the American League MVP in 1969 with ungodly numbers: 49 home runs, 140 RBIs and 145 bases on balls.
His death didn’t come as a surprise. Less than a week ago, Killebrew said that he gave up fighting the esophageal cancer and was at peace with the decision.
